Hiking and Walking Holidays in Reisseck

The National Park Hohe Tauern is the largest national park in central Europe and home to no less than 54 marked walking and hiking trails, trails that make their way around mountain lakes, waterfalls and a glacier with unique flora and fauna.

In summer two mountain funicular trains (the famous 'bergbahn') leave directly from Kolbnitz rising up the valley to the walking trails of the National Park Hohe Tauern, the first goes to Kreuzeck (1211m), while the second arrives on the other side of the valley in Reisseck (2245m). Both offer breathtaking views, great walks and opportunities to eat and drink in their 'huts'. Reisseckbahn is on the same sunny side of the valley as Chalet Kolbnitz and is only a few minutes from the house. The less popular, but equally beautiful Kreuzeckbahn leaves from lower Kolbnitz, on the other side of the valley, less than five minutes a way. Journeys on the bergbahn are free with the Kaernten (the Austrian name for Carinthia) Card.

Leisurely walks start as little as 100 metres from Chalet Kolbnitz, traversing across the valley toward Muhldorf, while the Rottau reservoir, which is just outside Kolnitz, offers some beautiful walks alongside it and the river Moll.

Danielsberg, the small peak whose church overlooks Kolbnitz is a protected area and offers a pleasant walk through the forest and ultimately an amazing view of Kolbnitz and the Rottau reservoir. To find Danielsberg follow the signs in the village, it is around a five minute drive.

Slightly further a field is the stunning Kölnbrein dam in the Malta valley, and beautiful lake side walks of Millstatt.
